EXETER COLLEGE BASKETBALL ACADEMY

Exeter College Basketball Academy competes in over 30 games a year and is run alongside a students full time academic programme. Players train four times per week and regularly compete in two competitive fixtures a week. Players are given nutritional, fitness training and sports therapy advise and are supported by a range of industry qualified professionals. Trials for the Exeter College Basketball Academy are held yearly in July however, late applicants are always welcome. About the Basketball Academy

 

South Devon College is working in partnership with England Basketball, and local clubs to offer you a new way to study. The Basketball Academy is an exciting programme that offers Basketball players the opportunity to combine full time academic study with specialist Basketball coaching.

 

As well as receiving high class performance coaching and the opportunity to play Basketball at South Devon College, you will also study for an advanced qualification;  the National Diploma in Sport which will be taught at the college. This qualification is designed to prepare individuals for a career in the growing sport and leisure industry.

 

The academy will provide the opportunity for students to develop their knowledge and Basketball skills, but will also give you the opportunity to play competitively at college, university, county, regional and national levels. South Devon College offers academy players the opportunity to participate in the British Colleges Sport South West Basketball league, the under 19 England Basketball league as well as the opportunity to compete at the British Colleges National Championships held at the prestigious Loughborough University.

 

During your study periods at the college you will be given a personal fitness training program and learn about the many aspects of Basketball.

 

You will also have the opportunity to undertake the England Basketball level 1 and level 2 coaching awards as well as additional vocational qualifications over your time at the college. These may include National Governing Body coaching qualifications, CSLA & HSLA, NPLQ, First Aid and Gym Instructor awards.

 

South Devon College Facilities

 

As a student you will be able to sample the excellent facilities on offer at South Devon College.

 

The facilities at the college include an indoor multi sports playing facility, a 25 station fitness suite, a fitness testing and diagnostics suite, access to video analysis coaching systems.  Academy players will also have access to full physiotherapy support throughout their time at the college. South Devon College also has changing and shower facilities on site, with dining, common room, ICT and student helpzone areas available.

 

What are the entry requirements?

 

You must be aged 16 to 19 and achieve five GCSEs at grade C or above including English; you will be required to attend an interview to discuss the course and your suitability as well as a practical trial in order to demonstrate your Basketball abilities and potential for the Academy.

 

After the Course?

 

Previous students on our Sports Academies programmes have gone on to take up places at both Loughborough and Exeter Universities, whilst many others are now working within the sports industry of their choice as professional coaches.

 

About the Coaches

 

South Devon College Basketball Academy coaches are highly qualified and experienced coaches. They are qualified with England Basketball to at least Level 2 standard. They offer expertise, enthusiasm and dedication with a remit to provide invaluable coaching skills to Academy players. Our coaches will also have experience of teaching, pastoral care and are committed to furthering their knowledge and understanding of Basketball.

 

 

The Coaching

 

The modern game requires a range of skills and a clear thought processes. The course will have a large emphasis focusing on the key elements of basketball; technical skills, tactical awareness, physical conditioning and mental aspects of the game. The coaching cycle is based around testing, implementing changes, practice and competition.

What will I be learning?
