Exeter University 3 vs Tiverton Titans
Oct 5, 2016, 6:14 pm

Exeter 54 - Tiverton 18

The first half was a very close contest. Gareth Taylor-Southall and Shane Barrell headed up a strong defensive play for Tiverton forcing Exeter to shoot from the outside. The play battled back and forth through the 1st half with both teams scoring equally.

The second half was a different story. Exeter came out strong and opened up a 30 point lead by the end of the 3rd quarter. Tiverton’s fatigue was starting to show with the whole team struggling to score. The younger, fitter Exeter team Maintained pressure and came out on top.

Well played Exeter.

Peelers Still looking For A Win!
Sep 30, 2016, 5:39 pm

Devon Peelers second excursion in the 2016/17 season was an inter-division match against League 2 Exmouth Jetsers, and it was Jesters that got off to the better start with Alex Wingfield controlling the top of the key on offence and Lemarc Espina hitting the 3’s from outside, however the all round play from Peelers and points by various players meant that at the end of the first quarter it was all square at 13 a piece.

The second quarter was very similar, with the ball being dished outside the key to Espina to score and he rarely missed an opportunity! However Peelers were clinging on in just 3 points down 28 – 25.

The third quarter Jesters turned on the style and a 3rd person adding to Peelers misery – the quarter ended 46 – 35 to Jesters.

It was do or die in the 4th quarter and Peelers slowly started drawing Jesters back, a well taken time out by Jesters in the 8th minute put an end to any nerves and Jesters re-grouped to win the match 64 – 51 with Espina finishing the match with a 3 point shot – very apt!

Espina top scored with 27 points including four 3 point conversions, but Alex Wingfield was MVP with 18 points and controlled the offence from the top of the key before dishing it out!

Newton Pacers Start Off With A Win
Sep 29, 2016, 8:49 pm

Pacers started the new Exeter and District Basketball League season with a home fixture against Weymouth Huskies who had to make the long journey for this first game.

As a result of the home advantage, Pacers looked to set a very high tempo at the start of the game and eventually the pressure took its toll on the opposition. During the 60 seconds of the fifth minute Pacers scored seven points to extend their lead to 15-1 points at the midway point of the first period.

Changing over the court players at this point did not change the effectiveness of Pacers defending as Weymouth only managed to add another point to their score by the end of the period. In offence, though, the new players showed a lack of a clinical edge to their shooting that slowed up the Pacers rate of scoring, so that by the first break they had only extended their lead a little further to 21-2 points.

For the first part of the second period the contest was much more even as Weymouth started to capitalise on some defensive miss matches by Pacers so that the score up to the midpoint of this period was six apiece. However, with a change of court personnel and a different defensive shape Pacers once again started to extend their lead and by half time Pacers were now 36-8 points ahead.

During the play after half-time Pacers improved their off the ball offensive movement and, together with some quick passing, this resulted in numerous shooting opportunities being generated.

For the first time in the game Pacers were able to keep up a steady rate of scoring for the whole of the ten minutes of play and consequently they added a further 20 points to their score to be 36-12 points ahead at the third break.

At the start of the fourth and final period of the game Pacers had an inspired passage of play scoring 16 points without reply, within the first four minutes.

However Pacers did not have it all their own way in the remainder of the game as Weymouth were then able to reply with 16points of their own (more than they had scored in the previous 34 minutes!) as they started to exploit gaps appearing in the home defence. That said, during these last 6 minutes Pacers were still adding to their score so that at the final whistle they had completed a comfortable win of 84-28 points.

For a first game of the season it was a very pleasing start, particularly with the spread of scoring across the team.

However there will be stiffer challenges ahead in the games to come and much to continue to develop on the training court.

Scorers/Players: J. Hodge 17, B. Short 17, V. Black 11, A. Sinden 10, L. Mei-Yin 9, S. Lee 8,
K. Lee 4, E. Renton 4, L. Barlow 2, G. Sinden 2 and I. Ridley.

Devon Peelers Lose On The Road
Sep 29, 2016, 8:48 pm

Devon Peelers set off for another season - this time in Div III, Broadclyst were waiting for them.

The first quarter stayed fairly close, Broadclyst finishing 16 - 13 in the lead. The second quarter was also close with the leaf reduced to just 1 point 30-29 at the half way stage.

Unfortunately for Peelers the 3rd quarter started with Broadclyst turning on the pace and the style, and with Peelers losing 3 players to injury!

Hall for Broadclyst (MVP) was cutting Peelers defence to pieces and that Simon Harding was taking the points with 39 in the match. By the close of the 3rd quarter Peelers were behind 64-40.

It was a lead that Broadclyst kept and finished the job with a 84-55 win.

Prywata MVP for Peelers with 25 points and welcome back to him!

Both Broadclyst and Peelers have another game in Div III next week.

Titans Steps Foot On Exeter and District League For 1st Game!
Sep 29, 2016, 8:47 pm

North Devon 82 – 35 Tiverton Titans

Tiverton Titans’ first game of their first season was a baptism of fire. Playing a team who were in the 2nd division last year, the Titans struggled to cope with North Devon’s early attack.

North Devon were smoking hot for the first 5-6 minutes, barely missing any shot they made.
As the Titans calmed down, and started to play with more control, the points slowly trickled in. But North Devon showed their experience with a more steady flow of points.

Once the Titans switched to a zone, they had the upper hand for a quarter, and started to chip away at the significant lead. A few sweet 3-pointers from the Shane Barrell & Rob Taylor-Southall set the bench alight. Could the dream comeback be on???

Sadly, the lead was too big and the Titans had to settle for a loss. For the points. But a huge win for effort, commitment and teamwork. 35 points in the first game. That’s a foundation to build on.

Exeter University III, we’re coming for you!
