The Men’s Cup Final looked a formidable match up, with defending Champions QE Crediton Chargers (and league champions elect after a so far undefeated season) playing last year’s League Champions and current 2nd place team Nomads. Crediton Chargesr have gone from strength to strength after rejoining the league a few seasons back under the original guidance of Alex BOARDMAN, but since he moved on the new leadership of James ADDY. Mike LEWIS at 7′ 2″ was reintroduced to basketball by Alex and he has helped gell a team of youth and maturity and allowing the youngsters time to develop with valuable league court time.
The match up looked good, but Nomads had to find someone to defend against LEWIS and Dan POTTER was put forward as the man to do it – looking a real David and Goliath battle in height terms! Crediton Chargers started very strong, with two big men in LEWIS and Dan WIECZOREK, supported by the two quick guards in Koen DUNPHY and DUNN. Nomads were looking for big games from all their players and everyone had to give their best game. Unfortunately for Nomads it appears Chargers were in no mood to let them settle and LEWIS and WIECZOREK especially did the damage in the 1st quarter and led 26-15 at the end, Henry LITTLE was the main threat for Nomads with nearly half of their 1st quarter points.
Nomads started better in the 2nd quarter and started off hitting double for each of Chargers baskets, but just as they reached half way and looked to be getting back into it Chargers again re-grouped and won the 2nd quarter by 4 points and now led 49-34 thanks to 9 quick points from Patrick MacWATTERS and TOMASZEWSKI in the final minute.
If things were going to change it had to be in the 3rd quarter, LITTLE gain was the man for the job for Nomads on offence, a massive 3/4 of Nomads points for the quarter but unfortunately the rest of the team were struggling offensively with Chargers defence, and TOMASZEWSKI carried on where he left off in the 2nd – the quarter ended with Nomads pipping it but still behind in the game 63-46.
Despite a lot of hard work in the final quarter the inevitable happened and QE Crediton Chargers followed up their win last season and won the Men’s Cup 86-73. A great spectacle to watch and feel part of, the crowd played their part. Basketball was the winner!
