Both teams are new to Exeter & District this season, Bridgwater have won the Division III Title with a 14 and 2 record, losing only to North Devon and Newton Abbot Pacers on the way.

Crewkerne Thunder entered Division II (hindsight is a wonderful thing and perhaps should have been Division III) and although finishing with a 4 & 11 record, they have had some good results more recently.

They have not met this year.

The game started very tentatively, both sides ‘testing’ one another’s defences and probing for a way through, Crewkerne were trying their luck from the 3-point line whilst Bridgwater tried to utilise their inside play. The quarter finished with Crewkerne having a narrow 11 – 9 lead.

The 2nd quarter went completely Bridgwater way, Crewkerne feeling unlucky with referee calls and with no luck from the roll of the rings, as the quarter progressed Bridgwater pushed ahead but with no luck from the free throw line their lead was restricted, and then just at the buzzer they sank a 3-point shot giving them the half-time lead 27 – 21.

Crewkerne took advantage of the half time to re-focus, and re-focus they did as they came out all guns blazing in the 2nd half Piotr LASON found the basket repeatedly from outside the key, but Bridgwater were trading baskets with them, from a low scoring match so far baskets were dropping at both ends, the quarter finished 26- 18 to Crewkerne which meant they had a 2 point lead going into the final quarter (47 – 45).

As the 4th quarter started, they reinforced that lead with 3 unanswered baskets, a lead 53 – 47 which in this game was significant. Despite Bridgwater getting a basket back, Crewkerne turned the screw with another 5-point run, a 58 – 47 lead with just 3 minutes left of the game. The next couple of minutes led to the trading of baskets, and then with only a minute left of the game Bridgwater had to start fouling to get the ball back, but the nerve was holding for Crewkerne, and at the buzzer Crewkerne Thunder ran out winners 66 – 52.

Well done to both teams for a great entertaining game which can be viewed on our YouTube Channel: https://youtu.be/3dMPhNAPWis
