The 60th Cup Finals Day for Exeter and District started with a match up ‘cross division’ with 1st Division Exmouth Knights meeting 2nd Division Newton Abbot Pacers – they had met previously in the Inter Division League when Knights lost by 4 points at Pacers at the very start of the season, Knights were also coming into the game missing a couple but having secured the services of George SINCLAIR recently.
The match up looked to be between George and Gareth LAWS, and it appeared to be George’s job to mark LAWS in this game, however the best laid plans, George looked a bit ring rusty and suffered with making several personal fouls against him in the first quarter. the game had set up at a frantic pace, and although LAWS was marked, Pacers players were keen to show they were not a one man team, and Brad WARREN stepped up with 9 points to help Pacers to a 21-11 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.
The 2nd quarter started and George SINCLAIR was starting to find his range, but picked up his 4th foul and was now walking a tight rope of a game. For Pacers Laws continued to plug away, and with valuable support points from Sam FLANDERS and Rafal CIECHACKI we were edging towards half time with Pacers maintaining their lead – then the inevitable happened for Knights in the 8th minute as Sinclair was fouled out of the game! Pacers took the quarter 22-19 and led 43-30 at half time.
The 2nd half beckoned, Knights had to reshuffle their defence, and went zone defence, Matt CUTHBERT started to make an influence on the match, with 7 points in the quarter as KNIGHTS took the quarter 19-15 and we witnessed the famous ‘WINGERS’ hook shot!
KNIGHTS had a mountain to climb in the final quarter, they were down 58-49 and needed something special, WINGFIELD and MENZIES stepped up with 4 and 6 points respectively, but with being restricted to only 12 points for the quarter and Chris ARNOLD scoring a valuable 6 points for PACERS, it was PACERS that took the Plate winning 77-61.
LAWS 28 points, WARREN 15, ARNOLD 12, FLANDERS and CIECHACKI 9
CUTHBERT 16 points, ROPER 12, WINGFIELD 11, MENZIES 8, SINCLAIR 7
