Focus on the clubs / teams

Michael Troulis, Founder of Exeter Spartans, identified the lack of junior basketball provision within the Exeter and District region, the closest clubs being in Uffculme, Taunton and the Torbay areas, a significant distance away. At the same time the significant opportunity to utilise the exceptional facilities at the newly built Exeter College Sports Hall and the density of school populations, in the Exeter area were realised. As a dedicated sports professional and basketball coach, Michael decided to investigate the possibility of developing a new club, which became the Exeter Spartans.

Therefore, in January 2017 he arranged a meeting with Exeter College Sports Academy Manager, Chris Wall, the Sports Development Manager, Dan Pulsford and Exeter College Sports Lecturer and Basketball Coach Alex Boyle. He presented his idea of forming a Basketball Club. The parties agreed, and therefore the beginning of Exeter Spartans journey had begun. This was a significant undertaking and the need for additional coaching assistance identified, Ryan Parker-Bowker and Bjorn Westman joined Michael as volunteer coaches.

On 7th of February 2017 the first session was held, there were only 4 players however, due to word of mouth and after extensive advertising and promotional campaign this number would reach attendants 40 by the end of the 10-week trial period. The trial was a success and the continuation of the Club assured.
In June 2017 Alex Boyle joined the Spartans as volunteer and treasurer. This enabled the club to grow once more and therefore the Club were going to provide 2 sessions per week and have 2 age groups coached at the same time, this was U16 Boys and U14 Boys both teams training twice a week whilst we agreed to attend regional tournaments, friendly games vs National League teams and arrange games Exeter against schools whenever possible.

Furthermore, an on-going partnership with Exeter College was established. This partnership has been of great advantage and fundamental for the success of the Club as it provided excellence in facilities, use of Exeter College Basketball Academy equipment, a central hub for basketball in the area with extensive and convenient transport links and facilitated the ability offer a progressive and optimal Basketball Pathway to our players.

In October 2017, both the U16’s and U14’s boys teams attended their first tournament, it was a successful venture with the U16’s winning their first ever tournament.

The growth in numbers and on-going success of the coaching programmes enabled the Club to extend the coaching program and in January 2018 with the birth of the u12 sessions at Exeter University. This addition was a huge success with over 30 children attending the coaching sessions.

In May 2018 Aaron Carpanini joined our coaching team. This was primarily to facilitate the further development of a National League pathway for his U/16 girl’s basketball squad. Therefore, Exeter Spartans now also has a girl’s contingent with a 15 player National League Squad as well as an additional 15-30 players training in u/14 and u/16 age groups. In the first season at National league level the Girls achieved a respectable fourth place in the South West Conference.

In July 2018 our U16 boys entered into the National league also for the first time ever. This was always going to be a tough season with none of the players having played at this level before. Despite this the team finished in an incredible 5th position in the league.

Following the season our Founder, Michael Troulis, made the decision to return to his home country of Greece to take up a professional coaching role with the club, OKE BC. This was a blow to the club but one that we have grown from.

This past season, 2019/2020 we have had over 100 members join the club all under the age of 16. Our boys and girl’s sessions have regularly grown in number over the season and have had recognition of success varying from call ups to the South West Aspire Programme for both boys and Girls, A South West Coach of the year award for coach (and now Chairman) Aaron Carpanini and even two National call ups to the England u15 squad for two of the girls.

In the 2019/20 Season the girl’s u16s were moved to the Central Division highlighting the lack of Basketball provision (especially for girls and women) in the South West and were crowned Champions in March 2020. An amazing achievement for the club in such a small space of time.

Our u16 boys squad competed in the South West Junior league for the first time and were in 4th position with 2 games to play. Our u14s and u12s are competing in the Somerset Central Venue league once a month whilst hosting and playing in a number of tournaments and games.

Moving into the 2020/21 season although there is a period of uncertainty due to COVID-19 the club has continued to look to grow, the youth programme will hopefully continue to grow and we are always on the lookout for new players, coaches and volunteers. Over the break we have added 2 men’s teams, Spartan Nomads, and a women’s team who will enter the Exeter and District Basketball league divisions next year, this will lead to a pathway for players to progress from young to adult players

Please get in touch if you would like to join, info@exeterspartans.co.uk

We are delighted that Exeter Spartans have joined Exeter & District Basketball Association by entering a women's team - this will provide a route for the over age National league girls, and other female players in the Exeter area and further boosts the quality of the ladies league - the only one in the South West!
